GREENSBORO, N.C., Jan. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Alamance Regional Medical Center, Annie Penn Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital and Women's Hospital have earned the Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™. The distinction recognizes the hospitals as being among the top 5 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades. Healthgrades is the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
"It is truly an honor to be recognized as being among the top places for care in America," says Cone Health Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Bruce Swords, MD. "And it is even better when you think about what the higher-level care provided across Cone Health means for our patients."
From 2013 through 2015, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had, on average, a 26.2 percent lower risk of dying (across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality is the clinical outcome), than if they were treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, 160,322 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 25 percent lower risk of dying from a stroke than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction.
"Given the variation in quality of care across the nation, it's never been more important for consumers to do their homework when searching for a hospital," says Healthgrades Chief Medical Officer Brad Bowman, MD. "Those hospitals that have received the Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award have proven their long-standing commitment to providing quality care to drive better health outcomes for their patients."
During the 2017 study period (2013-2015), hospitals earning the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures. This was measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
