HealthFitness' Dennis Richling, MD, leads panel discussion of new employee health behavior change model at NBGH national conference
"Critical moments and common occasions" will be presented Sept. 25 in Washington
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Employers are investing more than ever in incentives and programs to improve employee health. Sophisticated programs aim not only to gain participation in programs, but also to engage individuals long-term for healthy lifestyle change. A new model that harnesses the power of behavioral economics in tandem with proven behavior change models is the topic that Dennis Richling, MD, HealthFitness' chief medical and wellness officer will explore at the National Business Group on Health's Conference on Health, Productivity and Human Capital, Sept. 25, 2013 in Washington, DC.
Richling will moderate a panel featuring Sigrid S. Glenn, Ph.D., an expert in behavior theory and cultural processes and Regents Professor Emeritus at the University of North Texas. He will also be joined by K. Lynn Hipp, Global Integrated Health & Wellness Manager, Eastman Chemical Company, a 2011 C. Everett Koop National Health Award winner.
The session, "Critical moments and common occasions: Seizing motivation for lasting lifestyle change," will take place on the first day of the conference, Sept. 25 at 1:15 p.m.
"Some employees are highly motivated to change poor health behaviors, but others aren't engaged and don't participate in programs," Richling said. "The goal is to meet needs across the spectrum—from coaching those ready to change to leveraging the psychological processes necessary to increase motivation."
Understanding how to use small steps and reinforcements can nudge employees along a path to higher motivation, Richling said. "This panel breaks down the nuances of behavior change—the difference between adding a new healthy behavior and eliminating an unhealthy behavior, for example—and how to take health management coaching and programs to the next level."
