PISCATAWAY, N.J., May 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthEC®, a leading pioneer in population health management solutions, has breaking news that its Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anthony N. Akosa, leaves today for Nigeria on a Medical Mission, supported by the Eunice Akosa Foundation, Inc. The mission will take place on June 2nd and 3rd, 2015, in Uruagu Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. Uruagu is one of the four villages that make up the City of Nnewi in the southeastern part of Nigeria. The city of Nnewi is the second largest city in the Anambra state and known for its motor spare parts businesses.
This will be the inaugural mission organized by the Eunice Akosa Foundation, which was established to honor the exemplary life of Eunice Uche Akosa, who helped the needy children and women in her home town of Nnewi, Nigeria. The goal of this mission is to provide biometric screenings and basic primary care services to the underserved population in Africa. Patients will be screened in the two days for hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and weight problems. Biometric screenings (BP, BMI, Glucose and Lipid Profile) will be performed by lab technicians and entered into the foundation's Eunic-ePHR portal, developed by HealthEC®, for both patients and local providers. This portal developed by HealthEC® is now in use in applications across the globe. The patients will be given a hardcopy of their biometric results. Those with abnormal results will be counseled and referred to specific local providers, who will be given access to the HealthEC®-developed provider portal so they can view the biometric results when the patients come in to see them.
Participants in the mission will include 5 physicians (3 of them from the U.S.), 5 registered nurses (one from the U.S.), a licensed social worker from Canada, a dietician from Italy, and 4 U.S. IT specialists. Said Dr. Akosa: "Many people in Africa die of complications from hypertension and diabetes that they didn't even know they had. Our goal is to screen as many of the population in this underserved region as we possibly can, to properly diagnose these individuals, and ultimately to get them on a path to better health through awareness, medication, and lifestyle modification."
Medical supplies were generously donated by Henry Schein, one of the largest medical supply companies in the country, and VoCare, a leading telehealth firm in the U.S.
