Analyst Update: Earnings Updates, Strategy, New Technology and Event
U.S. stocks advanced on Thursday, recovering from their previous two disappointing sessions, as better than expected weekly jobless claims report boosted sentiment. The NASDAQ Composite gained 0.53%, to close at 4,945.54, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.46%, to 17,924.06, and the S&P 500 ended the day at 2,088.00, up 0.38%. European stocks were mixed on Thursday. Germany's DAX 30 rose 0.51%, while France's CAC 40 and the London's FTSE 100 were down 0.29% and 0.67%, respectively, on Thursday. Meanwhile, Asian markets closed lower on Thursday amid rising concern over a potential policy shift by Chinese stock market regulators. The Shanghai Composite, Australia's S&P ASX and Japan's Nikkei all fell on Thursday.
On April 30, 2015, Gilead Sciences Inc. announced its Q1 2015 results, posting total revenues of $7.6 billion as compared to $5.0 billion in Q1 2014. Product sales stood at $7.4 billion in the quarter compared to $4.9 billion in Q1 2013. Net income came in at $4.3 billion or $2.76 per diluted share in Q1 2015, compared to $2.2 billion or $1.33 per diluted share in Q1 2014.
Boston Scientific Corporation presented an overview of its long-term growth strategies at a meeting with the investment community on May 1, 2015. President and CEO, Mike Mahoney, said that the Company has planned investments of more than $800 million per year in R&D through 2019.
GE Oil & Gas announced the release of InspectionWorks Connect, a remote collaboration software platform for the nondestructive testing (NDT) and inspection industry. InspectionWorks Connect provides real-time access to live inspection video and data from anywhere in the world, which enables smarter, faster decision-making, improves inspector productivity and reduces training costs.
SiriusXM has announced that British folk rock band, Mumford & Sons, will perform an exclusive invitation-only concert for SiriusXM listeners on May 9, 2015. The private concert will feature Mumford & Sons performing music from their new album Wilder Mind, which was released on May 4.
On May 4, 2015, MGM Resorts announced its Q1 2015 results. Revenue declined by 11% YoY to $2.33 billion in Q1 2015, compared to $2.63 billion in Q1 2014. The decline was partly due to poor performance in China's Macau gambling hub. The Company's China business posted weak results for the quarter.
