Health Fidelity Announces Research Program to Support Advanced Use of Unstructured Clinical Data
Healthcare big data company offers its leading natural language processing platform for research use
PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Fidelity, a leading healthcare big data company, is making its cloud-based REVEAL product available for research use. REVEAL, Health Fidelity's natural language processing (NLP) platform, converts unstructured clinical notes into rich, fully structured and coded content in real-time. The product will support experienced researchers in leveraging the full clinical record rather than claims or discrete data alone. The cloud-based service will be offered through a one year research license for a $1,000 set up fee. A qualified principal investigator and a defined research protocol are required.
"The nation expects to see positive results from its enormous investment in healthcare information technology. The information is available and electronic. Healthcare organizations, industry and researchers must now come together to derive value from the full clinical record," said Dan Riskin, M.D., CEO and co-founder of Health Fidelity. "This research program is a small step toward delivering on a vision to leverage data to improve healthcare."
In recent years, the accuracy, usability, and breadth of commercial NLP technology has far surpassed open source systems based on heavy investment in research and development. As researchers aim to use the full clinical record to improve care, they will need advanced systems. REVEAL incorporates advanced clinical modeling defined and implemented under NSF and NIH funding and broad mapping to industry standard terminologies including ICD-9, ICD-10, SNOMED, RxNorm and LOINC. REVEAL also incorporates Columbia University's renowned MedLEE technology through exclusive license.
"REVEAL's advanced NLP capabilities generate a high-quality substrate for complex data mining projects to discover off-label drug use as well as drug related adverse events," said Dr. Nigam Shah, Assistant Professor at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research. "We use REVEAL to create detailed feature maps of patients to ensure such adverse events do not occur."
George Hripsak, Chair of Department of Biomedical Informatics and Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, states: "Columbia is delighted to see the power of MedLEE enhanced and combined with robust clinical modeling and a full terminology set. Working with the secure cloud service offers rapid implementation, scalability and a constantly improving product. It can be a great boon for the research community."
