BOSTON and LONDON, June 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Attention, procurement professionals—when it comes to moving to the C-suite, are you your biggest cheerleader? If someone asked how you contribute to your company, would your answer bring you closer to the people at the top?
Today, Tania Seary, Founding Chairman of Procurious.com, the leading online business community for the procurement/supply chain management profession, challenged her colleagues to measure their way to the boardroom. Whether making the case for more funding or greater responsibility, or reporting on the success of a recent project, she urged them to use key performance indicators (KPIs) to advance their careers.
"These metrics, which gauge progress in achieving corporate goals, are the language of business in the C-suite. Don't underestimate the power of a good KPI to secure your seat at the table," she said.
So where do procurement professionals who are new to the world of KPIs start? Ms. Seary recommended five rules of thumb for a good key performance indicator:
- Directly link to overall business objectives: "KPIs that deliver profit, free up cash, contribute to top-line growth, and protect the corporate reputation will resonate strongly with your senior leadership team," she said.
- KPIs need to be uncomplicated and measurable (ideally in hard dollar terms): Make sure your metrics don't require "forensics" to determine what you're really reporting.
- Measure outcomes, not inputs: The number of strategies or ideas you develop is inconsequential; what matters is the value these activities deliver to the business.
- Limit the number of KPIs: Marshal the discipline to get to five (or fewer) indicators for clarity and focus.
- Keep KPIs achievable: Inspire your team by targeting metrics that are realistic and valued by senior leadership.
"Move beyond the more obvious metrics that under-represent our true impact," Ms. Seary added. "We will never escape the requirement to track cost savings because we excel at it. Still, it's time to define the value-addition areas where we deliver every day—such as productivity, innovation, risk management, efficiency and talent—in hard-dollar terms."
