HDTV penetration has taken off as equipment prices have fallen to affordable levels and the number of channels on offer has become attractive to a mass audience. Some operators now offer HD channels free to subscribers within other packages – though subs often still have to pay for a relatively more expensive HD set-top box .
According to research by Informa, HDTV sets were present in just 3% of the world's TV households as recently as 2005. Since then growth has been spectacular and our forecasts show that by end-2016 platforms in several countries will be approaching the point where most, if not all, users will be actively watching HD content. This raises the prospect of another round of "switchovers" with HD becoming the norm and a new "UltraHD" emerging to serve as an enhancement to it.
Some 34 million active HD households will be added in 2011 bringing the total to 131 million. This number will more than triple again by 2016.
Major sports events such as the Olympics and World Cup soccer spur FTA broadcasters to provide HD channels. These sporting events increase consumer awareness of HD. High-definition TV will not take off in a territory until the main free-to-air broadcasters become involved.
North America currently ranks as the dominant region, accounting for two-thirds of 2010 HDTV totals. However, this proportion is expected to fall in the future as other regions catch up. Asia Pacific is the third-largest region; HDTV penetration in the APAC region is largely attributed to early adoption in Japan.
The new global HDTV report provides all the statistics and forecasts you will need on HD-ready households, HD-active households and highlight the key factors affecting each of the 53 global markets that this report focuses on.
