DALLAS, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Tomorrow night's "Dan Rather Reports" will present a special roundtable discussion with U.S. soldiers previously featured on the program. These soldiers, home for just hours from their deployment in Afghanistan, share with Rather their candid thoughts and feelings about what our country should do to ensure success in that country, but also share the heartbreaking consequences of war.

"During my 12 months, we killed two eight-year-old girls in my area," said Lieutenant Colonel Brian Pearl, who has just returned from Korengal Valley, one of the most dangerous places in Eastern Afghanistan. "And that was our last three weeks there, on a linear target where six mortar rounds were shot, and the last one, based on the base plate, under a rock, went a different way, and it was about 75 meters off -- killed two eight-year-old girls."
A clip of the program can be seen here:
The special roundtable discussion also includes Colonel Randy George, a graduate of West Point and the fourth brigade commander, Lieutenant Colonel Reik Andersen, and Lieutenant Colonel Robert Brown who serves under Colonel George. Each man has been featured in previous episodes of "Dan Rather Reports."
Each, however, did feel that significant progress is still being made in Afghanistan and that we must continue our efforts there in order to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.
"There are structural improvements that you can make in Afghanistan that can greatly impact the daily life of the Afghan citizen, can improve their outlook and their confidence in their own society," said Lieutenant Colonel Brown who told Rather that he had seen real, measurable progress during his tour of duty. "...having a two-lane road where you can take your crop of fruit to Jalalabad in two hours, three hours instead of 18 hours, that can change your life if you're a farmer because instead of having little incentive to produce more than I can eat, all of a sudden, I have the prospect of transporting and selling the things that I'm growing and having some additional money to buy other things."
"Dan Rather Reports – Return to Base," airs Tuesday, July 20, at 8:00 p.m. ET.
