On the second day – Metals Day, Dmitry Shashkov, Member of H.C. Starck's Executive Board and Head of the Business Unit Fabricated Products, gave a presentation on the material composition of airplanes, automobiles, mobile devices, medical diagnostic equipment, wind and solar energy, and LED lighting. Furthermore, Shashkov explained why metals are important to advancing progress as new applications and technologies emerge. H.C. Starck is on the leading-edge of developing new materials that provide innovative solutions to customers.
Dmitry Shashkov said, "With today's rapid technological advancements, it is important for teachers to acquire Material Science knowledge to share with their students. Promoting science education is a key goal for H.C. Starck, because there is a lack of qualified scientists and engineers in the marketplace." Field trips to H.C. Starck's sites will give students firsthand knowledge of what is going on in real world manufacturing. "It's important for students to see that new materials play a critical role in technologies that we, as consumers, are enjoying today," said Dmitry Shashkov.
The ASM Materials Camp for students is an effective motivational tool and discovery-based learning approach to make science fun and motivate students to seek a rewarding career in the sciences.
R&D Engineering staff from the H.C. Starck Newton site participated in both the teacher and student camps. During the summer, two 1-day student camps were conducted, one at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the other at Boston University.
