Haunted Houses Now Open Beyond October
Haunt Enthusiasts Demand Longer Season and Year-Round Operations
PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., Oct. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Halloween is celebrated on Monday, many Halloween lovers and haunted house fans will mourn the passing of their beloved spooky season—but not for long.
To keep up with consumer demand, the Haunted Attractions Association (HAA) says more and more of its members are opening earlier, staying open later and are even continuing to operate all year round. This is good news for haunt enthusiasts who don't want the celebration of the macabre to come to an end October 31st.
Over the past decade, haunted attraction operating hours have evolved toward an extended seasonal schedule, opening their doors around Labor Day weekend in September and staying open until the first weekend in November. Some may also reopen during special occasions such as haunt conventions or Spring Break, or hold private parties throughout the year. While seasonal haunts still make up the majority, there is a rapidly growing contingent of haunted attractions that are open year round. These operations are typically located in tourist areas or near resort communities.
"We're opening earlier and staying later than ever before due to the demand from our audience. People go to great lengths and distances to visit a variety of haunted attractions across the country, even when the commercial Halloween season is over. There are so many haunts with so much entertainment value to offer—it's truly become a subculture movement instead of just a fun holiday for kids," said Patrick Konopelski, HAA President.
Haunt enthusiasts can plan their next haunt visit using an interactive "Haunt Finder" map on the association's website that will lead them to open and close dates at each member haunt website.
The haunted attraction industry is approximately $6 billion in size and includes an estimated 2,500 haunted attractions worldwide. To arrange an interview with an HAA spokesperson, please contact Kaitlin Friedmann, (609) 297-2215 or [email protected].
