Harvey Milk's Nephew on the Meaning of Harvey Milk Day
SAN FRANCISCO, May 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk and co-founder and President of the Harvey Milk Foundation, released the following statement today to mark the second annual Harvey Milk Day:
"Today my uncle would have been 81 years old. However he gave us his life 32 years ago, knowing that the first of any civil rights movement, who so clearly and loudly proclaim their right to equality, most often meets a violent and sudden end. He would leave us with a compass based on hope, hope born of bullets, not smashing into his brain, but smashing our masks and our fear of authenticity."

The Harvey Milk Foundation was established in 2010 as a non-profit charitable organization to promote Harvey Milk's legacy through education and outreach. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in the United States when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. He was assassinated in San Francisco's City Hall in November 1978. The Foundation is led and founded by Harvey's nephew, Stuart Milk, and Anne Kronenberg, Harvey's campaign manager and political aide.
