Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation Announces Healthy Food, Healthy Community Award
$5,000 will be awarded to one non-profit organization committed to connecting Connecticut's families to healthy food
HARTFORD, Conn., March 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation recently announced that nominations are open for its Healthy Food, Healthy Community Award, which will recognize one non-profit organization in Connecticut that is making an impact by connecting healthy food to families. The non-profit will be awarded $5,000 by the Foundation.
Connecticut residents are invited to nominate a non-profit organization by visiting the NBC Connecticut Facebook page (www.facebook.com/NBCConnecticut) and click on the contests and promotions section. Nominators can submit a short nomination statement in 250 words or less describing "how the organization is making a difference in helping low-income Connecticut families and communities receive healthy food." Entrants can nominate their own organization.
The deadline for submissions is March 23, 2020 at 10pm and the organization receiving the $5,000 award will be announced on NBC Connecticut during the week of April 6, 2020.
"As Connecticut's only non-profit health insurance company, we aim to give back to all of the communities we have the privilege to serve," said Jason Madrak, Vice President of the Connecticut market for Harvard Pilgrim. "We realize not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to healthy, fresh foods every day. This award will allow us to support an organization who's working to bring great health to our communities."
The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation is focused on building healthy communities across the region. In 2016, the Foundation launched its Healthy Food Fund, which supports programs that grow and distribute fresh food for low-income families and communities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Healthy Food Fund currently supports seven Connecticut-based nonprofits by providing funds to grow, glean or distribute healthy food, as well as to launch mobile farmers markets that travel to neighborhoods without easy access to healthy food. These mobile markets accept SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) and often provide funds to double the buying power of SNAP users.
