Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute Headache Center Celebrates Grand Opening
A National Destination in West Hartford
HARTFORD, Conn., July 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute announced the grand opening of the highly-anticipated Hartford HealthCare Headache Center in West Hartford, Connecticut. In the United States alone, more than 37 million people suffer from migraine. But there is new hope with the Hartford HealthCare Headache Center, a one-of-kind, world-wide destination center and a real game-changer for patients suffering from all kinds of headache including migraine and acute migraine.
The Headache Center is led by world-renowned Dr. Brian Grosberg, Medical Director of the Hartford HealthCare Headache Center. The center is the first-of-its-kind to fully-integrate every aspect of patient care to best serve headache sufferers. Each patient has a tailored and individualized treatment protocol. The Center offers patients leading-edge treatment including medication, nerve blocks, TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and will soon offer exclusive access to office-based infusion therapy with four infusion bays. This service is available only at select headache centers in the country.
Patients will also have access to the latest clinical trials as the Hartford HealthCare Headache Center will set the standard for headache treatment locally and across the globe. Leading-edge research trials advance the care to better treat acute migraine—and other physicians will learn from the scientific advances that Dr. Grosberg and his team incorporate into clinical practice.
The Center also offers patients Bio-behavioral treatments such as:
- Biofeedback
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Relaxation techniques
- Mindfulness-based interventions delivered by our specially trained headache psychologist.
The Center provides joint consultations with disciplines that intersect with and are crucial to providing optimal headache care. This includes evaluations by physical therapists, women's health specialists, integrative and complementary medicine, pain management, and nutrition counseling; all of these services are housed within the same building as the headache center.
"We are quickly becoming a destination center for people seeking care for the chronic, severe, recurring headaches," said Dr. Grosberg, a board-certified neurologist and headache specialist and the former director of the world-renowned Montefiore Headache Center in New York City.
The Hartford HealthCare Headache Center has already become a national hub for headache research, including a clinical trial looking at the effectiveness of an app for migraine treatment. It's called the Nerivio Migra Neurostimulation device. The wearable device has electrical leads and patches that are applied to the back of the arm. When the phone app turns on the device and adjusts the stimulation, it blocks pain signal transmission to the brain. This allows patients to treat migraine without any medication.
The center offers an environment soothing to those fighting debilitating headaches. There is no fluorescent lighting and there are special dimmers in every room. Benefits extend beyond the new facility with discounted rates to boutique hotels for patients who travel long distances.
"Delivering high quality, personalized care is really a shared vision among the amazing team of people I am fortunate enough to work with here," Dr. Grosberg said. "We are extremely patient-centered, highly dedicated and committed to providing this level of care, a level of care that has become a destination point for people who suffer from headaches across the state, the nation and even internationally."
The 3,700-square foot center includes eight exam rooms at 65 Memorial Road, Suite 508, in West Hartford. Dr. Grosberg practices there with Andrea Murphy, APRN and Sheena Mehta, PA-C. The headache center also has a location in Meriden, led by Dr. Abigail Chua. There is a third center planned for Waterford in the fall.
"Many times people with headaches don't just have physical pain – chronic headaches can cause psychological as well as sleep issues," Dr. Grosberg said. "Our goal is to empower them with techniques to reduce their levels of pain and improve their sleep and quality of life at the same time. Normally you would go to separate locations, but here you have it all under one roof. We are among the few centers in the world to provide these services in one place – it is such a benefit to our patients."
