Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, today announced $15,000 in donations to two charities serving our nation's Veterans. Jim Traficant, vice president and general manager, Harris Healthcare Solutions, presented $10,000 to "The Mission Continues" at a reception hosted by Harris during the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference and Exhibition in Orlando. Harris also donated $5,000 to the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic.
"The Mission Continues strives every day to provide our Veterans with opportunities to serve their country after completing their military service," said Traficant. "These Veterans have devoted so much to our country – it's a privilege for us to give a little back. Harris is proud to support the great work of The Mission Continues."
Eric Greitens, a Navy SEAL veteran, started "The Mission Continues" in 2007 after visiting Marines at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland upon his return from Iraq. He wanted to create a charity that would give returning Veterans, many of them wounded in combat, the chance to continue serving their community as civic leaders. In October 2010, the Manhattan Institute recognized "The Mission Continues" with its distinguished Social Entrepreneurship Award. "The Mission Continues" also received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for its charity work with Veterans.
Harris is also supporting the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, co-sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs, which will be held March 27 to April 1 in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Disabled Veterans will learn adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing, and will be challenged by other adaptive sports and activities. Nearly 400 disabled Veterans are expected to participate, many with spinal cord injuries, amputations and visual impairments.
"The Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic is the world leader in providing our wounded Veterans with the rehabilitation they deserve through participation in Alpine sports," said Traficant. "Harris is proud to again sponsor the Winter Sports Clinic and the amazing work they do to honor our wounded Veterans."
