Harper Government Supports Volleyball Canada

TORONTO, April 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's support for Volleyball Canada at the launch of the 2012 Canadian Open Volleyball Championships and the FIVB Volleyball World League 2012 at Exhibition Place in Toronto. Both events will take place from May 17 to 22, 2012.

The two events taking place simultaneously in Toronto will showcase volleyball at its finest. The week will feature domestic competition for up to 700 teams, from the U-14 division to the senior division, including the Sitting Volleyball Canada Cup. The prestigious World League will feature Canada's National Men's Team taking on Brazil, Finland, and Poland.

"I congratulate Volleyball Canada for this massive undertaking that will not only showcase the amazing talent of our Canadian volleyball teams, but also provide invaluable opportunities for competition and training experience," said Minister of State Gosal. "Our Government is proud to have contributed to the hosting of these two events, which further advance the high-performance sport culture of our nation and provide a welcome economic boost to the region and to Canada as a whole."

Volleyball Canada is the national sport governing body for volleyball in Canada. The organization develops and implements national programming from the entry level to the management of its national team and high-performance programs in collaboration with volleyball's 12 provincial/territorial sport organizations.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. The Government of Canada has provided $250,000 from Sport Canada's Hosting Program for the FIVB Volleyball World League 2012 and a further $50,000 for the Sitting Volleyball Canada Cup—an integral part of the 2012 Canadian Open Volleyball Championships.
