Harper Government Supports the 2013 Ford World Men's Curling Championship
VICTORIA, April 7, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) in support of the 2013 Ford World Men's Curling Championship. The event was held in Victoria from March 30 to April 7, 2013.
"Our Government, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, is proud to support the Canadian Curling Association for the 2013 Ford World Men's Curling Championship," said Minister of State Gosal. "Hosting international sport events like this one offers an opportunity for our athletes to compete against the best in the world, while also bringing a welcome boost to the local economy. I congratulate the Canadian Curling Association and the organizers on their efforts, and I wish the best of luck to all the athletes on the road to Sochi."

The Canadian Curling Association is the national governing body for the sport of curling in Canada. The CCA encourages and facilitates the growth and development of curling in cooperation with its network of affiliates. It is also responsible for overseeing the Canadian national teams at world championships, as well as the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. Funding of $50,000 in support of this event was provided through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. Sport Canada's Sport Support Program approved approximately $2.9 million to the Canadian Curling Association in the 2012-2013 fiscal year. In 2011-2012, approximately $630,000 was provided through the Athlete Assistance Program to assist 67 curlers with training and living expenses.
