Harper Government Promotes Young Canadians' Knowledge of Their History
VANCOUVER, Feb. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Minister Responsible for British Columbia, today announced support for Action Canada's fellowship program. This investment will continue to encourage Canadians to take part in enriching fellowships that promote a better understanding of Canada and public policy choices.
"Through Action Canada's fellowship program, young people have the opportunity to connect with one another and exchange ideas, while deepening their knowledge of Canada," said Minister Moore. "With this investment, our Government is contributing to a more informed and engaged citizenry, and to the strength of our great nation. As we approach Canada's 150th birthday in 2017, we have a wonderful opportunity to help our young people discover what defines Canadian society and to encourage them to participate in it."
Each year, Action Canada selects up to 20 young Canadians for an eleven-month fellowship that provides them with opportunities to enhance their leadership skills, enrich their understanding of Canada and contribute to the Action Canada Network. Every fellowship year has a central theme that addresses public policy issues of significance to Canada. Fellows work on different Task Forces that produce reports and recommendations in relation to the annual theme during five working conferences that are held across Canada.
"Today's announcement of three years of funding for Action Canada demonstrates this Government's commitment to working with the private sector to build leadership for Canada's future," said Sam Belzberg and David Aisenstat, co-chairs, Action Canada Board. "We would like to thank especially Minister Moore. Thanks to the ongoing support of Canadian Heritage, there is a valuable and growing national network of Action Canada Fellows dedicated to the future of our country."
The Government of Canada is providing funding of $3,000,000 over three years to the Action Canada Foundation through Canadian Heritage's Canadian Studies Program. This program encourages Canadians to learn about Canada's history, civic life, and public policy.
