Harper Government announces new investments in Prince Albert National Park

Strengthening Canadians' connection to nature

PRINCE ALBERT, SK, March 6, 2015 /CNW/ - Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister Responsible for Parks Canada, today announced infrastructure projects in Prince Albert National Park. These projects are the result of an investment by the Government of Canada in our natural and cultural heritage to support infrastructure work in our national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation area.

The Government of Canada is making an investment of $220,000 to lay asphalt and make repairs to flood-damaged Highway 263, $2.7 million in repairs to flood damage on Cookson road, and $270,000 in funding to repair slope destabilization threatening the Nature Centre, a federally protected heritage building. A combined total of $3.21 million is intended for these three projects alone.

• Prince Albert National Park is the largest protected wilderness area in Saskatchewan, has one of the biggest colonies of white pelicans in Canada and one of the few free-roaming herds of plains bison in the country.
• Approximately 240,000 people visit Prince Albert National Park annually.
• On November 24, the Prime Minister announced a multi-billion investment to support infrastructure improvements to heritage, tourism, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. This was part of a new $5.8 billion federal infrastructure program.
• Parks Canada investments support the Government's National Conservation Plan while also creating jobs, promoting visitor experience and supporting communities across Canada.
• As Canada nears its 150^th birthday in 2017, the Government of Canada invites Canadians to learn more about the major events that have shaped their country's history. Canada's national parks and historic sites enables Canadians to experience their rich history and heritage in a special way and play a big part in the celebration of Canada 150.
