Harold Grinspoon Receives 2015 Sy Syms Humanitarian Award
Sy Syms School of Business Celebrates 28 Years of Excellence
NEW YORK, May 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of Sy Syms legacy, real estate developer, Harold Grinspoon, founder of Aspen Square Management and trustee of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation was presented with the 2015 Sy Syms Humanitarian Award at the 28th annual Sy Syms School of Business Gala Awards Dinner on April 30, 2015 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York, NY.
During the reception, Harold Grinspoon joined Sy Syms Foundation President and founding member Marcy Syms for a fireside chat. "Yeshiva University is the only top-tier institution of higher education in the United States that combines the study of Torah with secular studies, and that model is important for our future," said Marcy Syms, daughter of the late Sy Syms. "My association with the Sy Syms School of Business has been nurturing to me as a business leader and woman and the success of its students gives us added incentive to continue doing good work."
The Sy Syms Humanitarian Award is awarded by Yeshiva University in partnership with the Sy Syms Foundation. The recipient must embody the ideals of its namesake, the renowned entrepreneur and community leader, Sy Syms. About her father Marcy Syms said, "his guiding core value was education. That value is very much at the center of our Jewish values. Legacy creation requires thinking beyond today. It is in that spirit that we created the Sy Syms Humanitarian Award, to recognize an individual who has navigated through all the obstacles to create material wealth and then used that success to pursue, Tzedakah, or righteous action. "
Like the inaugural recipient Mort Zuckerman, Harold Grinspoon is a leader in business and philanthropy and has shared his good fortune providing a strong return for the Jewish and general communities. Founded in 1991, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation was established to engage Jews in the richness of their Jewish tradition. Grinspoon is perhaps best known for his PJ Library, a Jewish engagement program that has distributed 5 million books to almost 200,000 subscribers in 200 communities in the US and Canada.
The Sy Syms Foundation was established in 1985 by retail entrepreneur and humanitarian Sy Syms, the late father of Marcy Syms, President and founding trustee. The foundation has been instrumental in the growth of non profit organizations that support advancement in education, scientific research and artistic expression for a better life for all. Most significant grantees are Sy Syms School of Business, PBS, WNET, WNYC, American Heart Association, NY Rescue Mission, Wiezman Institute, Boston University, Inner City Scholarship Fund and Lincoln Center Corporate Fund among others.
