HAP Partners with United Physicians and Oakland Southfield Physicians to Offer New Zero-dollar ($0) Medicare Advantage Plan
New plan offers access to 400 of the highest-rated physicians in metro Detroit
DETROIT, Oct. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Alliance Plan (HAP) has partnered with two local physician organizations – United Physicians and Oakland Southfield Physicians – to create an innovative Medicare Advantage plan that gives HAP members access to more than 400 of the highest-rated primary care physicians in metro Detroit, while also offering access to HAP's full network of specialists and health care facilities.
Called Primary Choice, this Medicare Advantage HMO plan has a zero-dollar ($0) premium and zero-dollar ($0) preventive services coverage. It is available to Medicare-eligible residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
Primary Choice is unique in that it was created by physicians specifically to help meet the needs of their Medicare-eligible patients. Primary care physicians from United Physicians and Oakland Southfield Physicians worked together with HAP to develop a health plan that makes sure as many people as possible have access to quality, affordable health care and coverage.
Examples of physician-designed benefits of the Primary Choice plan include zero-dollar ($0) copays for PCP visits, lab work, telehealth services and annual physicals, as well as zero-dollar ($0) coverage for pulmonary and cardiac rehab, which is designed to reduce hospital readmissions.
Understanding the important role primary care physicians play in the health and well-being of their patients, the Primary Choice plan allows PCPs to be the drivers of care for their patients. In this plan, primary care physicians coordinate patient care through referrals to specialists. Primary Choice PCPs have the flexibility to refer patients to any specialist or health care facility in the extensive HAP network. A HAP referral is not required.
Primary care physicians are well positioned to coordinate the care of their patients. Having a single source serve as the gatekeeper for a patient's health information results in fewer medication errors, lower hospital readmission rates and overall patient satisfaction with the medical attention received.
"Primary care physicians are on the front lines in providing care to their patients, especially when it comes to Medicare members," said Michael Genord, M.D., chief medical officer, HAP. "PCPs are uniquely positioned to help their patients navigate the often-confusing world of the health care delivery system. That's why HAP has partnered with United Physicians and Oakland Southfield Physicians. These two organizations have some of the highest-performing local physicians and are the ideal partners to make sure the patient-physician relationship is trusted and strong."
"The importance of the physician-patient relationship cannot be overstated," said Michael Williams, M.D., president and CEO, United Physicians. "Medicare patients rely heavily on their physicians when making medical decisions, which is why this plan and partnership are so strategic. When it comes to health care coordination, Primary Choice puts physicians in the driver's seat, which is where they belong."
"Aligning physicians directly with a health plan enhances overall patient care," said Jerome Frankel, D.O., medical director, Oakland Southfield Physicians. "We are excited that HAP approached us with this partnership because the collaboration between Oakland Southfield Physicians, United Physicians and HAP will result in better care coordination, which will ultimately benefit HAP members who are also our valued patients."
Consumers may select Primary Choice beginning October 15, the start of the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which runs through Dec. 7. Coverage will be effective January 1, 2019. Those who become eligible for Medicare at a later date may select Primary Choice at that time.
