JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of International Correspondence Writing Month (InCoWriMo) and Valentine's Day, Pilot Corporation of America (Pilot Pen) is sharing new and surprising insights about the ongoing importance of writing by hand and connecting via the written word. Their recent survey revealed that although digital devices continue to play an ever-increasing role in our everyday lives, more than 80 percent of respondents still hand write every day.
Americans seem to understand the benefits of writing by hand, with over 90 percent of those surveyed stating that writing things down helps them better retain information. Although more than 80 percent of survey respondents agree that writing down goals aids in achieving them, only 25 percent of those surveyed committed their New Year's resolutions to paper.
According to a US News and World Report study*, more than 80 percent of people abandon their New Year's resolutions by the second week of February. This indicates that taking the time to write down those 2019 resolutions could help people get back on track. Pilot Pen encourages individuals struggling to stick to their 2019 goals to use InCoWriMo as the opportunity to tap into the benefits of writing by hand.
"The benefits of handwriting have been scientifically proven and continue to be highly relevant, even in this digital age," said Ariann Langsam, Vice President of Consumer Marketing for Pilot Pen. "We want to help people understand and embrace these benefits and put them into action."
Pilot Pen also wants to encourage everyone to take a few minutes this month to send a handwritten note to a loved one or friend. With our digital forms of communication, we have gained immediacy but lost intimacy. Over 90 percent of survey respondents stated that receiving a handwritten note or greeting card made them feel loved and appreciated. With both InCoWriMo and Valentine's Day this month, there is no better time to tap into the power of the hand-written word to connect with those we love.
Writing by hand can also aid in emotional wellbeing. The American Psychological Association** stated that 3 out of 4 Americans reported experiencing at least one stress symptom in the last month. More than 36 percent reported feeling nervous or anxious due to stressful factors in their lives. Many individuals are actively seeking out calming activities to build into their daily routines. Pilot's survey revealed that 43 percent of participants reported noticeably lower stress levels when engaging in writing-related activities such as journaling, letter-writing and list-making. Celebrate InCoWriMo this month by picking up a pen and embracing the wide range of tangible and emotional benefits that can result from connecting pen to paper.
