Hands-On Science Camp Makes Summer Fun at the California Science Center

LOS ANGELES, March 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Science Center Hands-On Science Camp is all set to engage young imaginations by exploring physics, chemistry, biology, space and earth sciences through age-appropriate courses. More than 30 unique week-long courses are available, ranging from Pre-K to 10^th grade. Camp begins June 12 and continues through August 11, 2017.

Campers can choose space-themed courses such as "3, 2, 1 Blast Off!" (1^st/2^nd grade), "Go for Launch!" (3^rd/4^th grade), "Rocket to Space" (5^th/6^th grade), and "Working in Space" (7^th/8^th grade) to learn more about our universe and space travel. Students will also visit the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion.

The camp's Little Learner programs offer parent-child classes that illustrate scientific themes with engaging hands-on activities and crafts. For example, in "Good Vibrations," young campers can "get rocking" by building their own instruments and exploring the importance of sound for survival and communication. In "Ingenious Engineers," kindergartners put their problem-solving skills to the test to see which solution works the best. "Science Master" (1^st/2^nd grades) presents a different science subject each day – engineering, chemistry, physics – to demonstrate how science changes how we view the world.

"Our classes combine fun activities with creative challenges," says Gretchen Bazela, Senior Director of Education.  "Using science, technology, engineering and math helps students learn how to solve problems and encourages the development of critical thinking skills."

Additional highlights include full-day classes such as "Drone Zone," where campers can design, build and test their own drone, and "The Science of 3D Animation 101," which presents animation principles and techniques, as well as how to create an animated film.  A half-day class for 9^th/10^th graders, titled "Soap Box Derby Racers," explores friction, momentum, potential and kinetic energy as students engineer a soap box derby car.

Hands-On Science Camp takes place in the Science Center's Wallis Annenberg Building for Science Learning and Innovation. The facility offers state-of-the-art themed classrooms and the 32,000 square-foot Big Lab, with its large-scale experiment platforms. Many courses are enhanced by the Big Lab's unique features with hands-on investigations involving air flow, buoyancy, gravity, ecology and more. 

Courses vary in price with half- and full-day session rates. California Science Center Foundation members receive a discount rate.  An extended day program is available for kindergarten – 10^th  graders.
