Hamilton Sundstrand Water Production System Delivered to ISS During STS-131 Mission

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn., April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Sabatier Reactor System, developed by Hamilton Sundstrand's Space, Land & Sea business to provide water production services for the International Space Station, was delivered to the station during the current STS-131 mission, which launched on April 5. Hamilton Sundstrand is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The Sabatier Reactor System combines hydrogen -- which is a waste product of Hamilton Sundstrand's Oxygen Generation Assembly -- and waste carbon dioxide from the station's Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly to produce water and methane. The methane is vented into space while the water is fed into the station's wastewater system -- which features Hamilton Sundstrand's Water Processor Assembly -- where it undergoes treatment before it is used for drinking, personal hygiene and scientific experiments. The Sabatier Reactor System could produce as much as 2,000 pounds of water per year.

"After the shuttle retires this year there will be an additional need for water on the International Space Station and we've found a creative way to give it to them," said Darren Samplatsky, Hamilton Sundstrand Space, Land & Sea's Sabatier Program engineering manager.

In 2008 NASA awarded Hamilton Sundstrand Space, Land & Sea a firm fixed-price contract to build the Sabatier Reactor System according to performance requirements and specifications outlined by NASA.

Named for Paul Sabatier, a French chemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1912, this water production technology has been under development at Hamilton Sundstrand for more than 40 years.

With 2009 revenues of $5.6 billion, Hamilton Sundstrand is headquartered in Windsor Locks, Conn. It provides a number of systems for the International Space Station, including those that control electrical power and process water, waste and air.
