According to the Government Accounting Office (GAO), hearing loss and hearing-related conditions are among the most common claims received by the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2009, annual hearing loss-related compensation exceeded $1.1 billion.
"The challenge is that hearing aids are often regarded as the primary solution for those with hearing loss," says Kelly Wacker, Au.D., Audiology Clinic Coordinator, University of Nebraska. "What must be considered are the lifestyle and communication needs of each individual – how they live, work, play and communicate."
Oftentimes a single solution, such as a hearing aid, is not all a veteran with hearing loss needs to enjoy an enriched, fulfilling life. Conversing in a crowded room may require a different solution than engaging in a meaningful telephone conversation. Similarly, enjoying an evening at the theater may require a different solution than a meeting at the office or dining with family in a restaurant or at home.
