Hadapt Expands Board with Experienced Big-Data Industry Executives
Former HP, Aster Data, and Opsware Executive Joins Hadapt Board of Directors; Former CEO of MarkLogic Joins as Advisor
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Hadapt, creator of the first big data platform to integrate Apache Hadoop with a structured data store to allow for high performance analytics across both structured and unstructured data, today announced that it has added Sharmila Shahani-Mulligan to its board of directors, and that it has brought on Dave Kellogg as an advisor. A former senior executive at HP, Opsware, and Aster Data, Shahani-Mulligan brings to Hadapt a wealth of experience developing new software markets and building successful companies. Kellogg was SVP of Worldwide Marketing for Business Objects prior to becoming CEO of MarkLogic, and significantly adds to the Hadapt leadership team's deep industry expertise.
"I'm very excited to have Sharmila join our board and to gain Dave as an advisor," said Hadapt CEO Justin Borgman. "Both are accomplished veterans of the 'big data' industry, and bring a wealth of product and corporate strategic insight to Hadapt's executive leadership. Their experience in growing enterprise software companies into market leaders will be invaluable as we continue to scale Hadapt's engineering and sales teams." Shahani-Mulligan joins Matthew Howard of Norwest Venture Partners and Felda Hardymon of Bessemer Venture Partners on Hadapt's board of directors. Hardymon's past Big Data successes include Vertica Systems and Endeca Technologies.
Shahani-Mulligan was CMO for Aster Data, leading product and marketing strategy. She created a new market category for big data analytics and drove Aster Data to a leading position within it. Aster Data was acquired by Teradata in April, 2011. Prior to Aster Data, Shahani-Mulligan was CMO of the largest business unit (BTO) within HP Software, and was responsible for a $3+ billion software products portfolio spanning all major aspects of IT management. Prior to HP, she was CMO at Opsware, where she joined Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz to re-position Loudcloud into a software company and to form Opsware in 2002; she has also held senior positions at Kiva Software, Netscape, AOL and Totality.
"With Hadapt's approach of bringing together structured and unstructured data into a single 'big data' platform, there is no question that Hadapt is uniquely positioned to lead the new era of data-driven applications," said Shahani-Mulligan. "It is not easy for companies to analyze structured relational data alongside unstructured data, and Hadapt finally solves this problem with a unique and validated approach. I'm excited to be working with them to develop the market for multi-structured data analytics, a market that will enable organizations to serve up a new class of big data applications."
In his role as advisor, Dave Kellogg brings to Hadapt two decades of deep expertise in the database, data management, and big data industries. Kellogg was most recently a member of Aster Data's board of directors up until the company's acquisition in April 2011. Previously, Kellogg was CEO of MarkLogic, a pioneer in multi-structured data management and analysis, and grew the company's revenues to $80 million. Prior to MarkLogic, Kellogg was SVP of Worldwide Marketing for Business Objects, where he helped drive the company's growth from $30 million to $1 billion in annual revenue, over his nine-year tenure. Kellogg has also held executive positions at Versant and Ingres.
"Hadapt has a stunning new solution to the big data analytics challenges facing companies today," said Kellogg. "They've created a very powerful data management platform that allows an enterprise to analyze any amount and any type of data to answer any question about the business. I look forward to working with the Hadapt team to build on its early successes."
"Dave and Sharmila are two of the best and most complete marketing executives in the history of the software industry," said Curt Monash, President of Monash Research and Editor of DBMS 2. "Overall, Hadapt has assembled a tremendous team of strategic advisers."
In a separate news release today, Hadapt announced that the company has closed a $9.5 million Series A round of financing. The round was led by Norwest Venture Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners.
