H Queen's Announces Gallery David Zwirner as Anchor Tenant
Renowned Gallery Debuts in Asia in Hong Kong's First Purpose-Built Art and Lifestyle Building
NEW YORK, June 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Henderson Leasing Agency Company Ltd., as a wholly owned subsidiary of Henderson Land Development Company Ltd. (collectively called "Henderson") as well as the leasing and marketing agent of the development H Queen's (HQ), has announced that celebrated art dealer David Zwirner will debut his first gallery in Asia at HQ - the new purpose-built 24-storey gallery and lifestyle tower currently under construction at 80 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong.
Considered one of the most influential people in the contemporary art world, David Zwirner has galleries in New York (in Chelsea) and London (in Mayfair) and represents over 50 prominent artists and estates, including Michaël Borremans, Marlene Dumas, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Jeff Koons, Oscar Murillo, Yayoi Kusama, Sigmar Polke, Neo Rauch, Richard Serra, Luc Tuymans, Jordan Wolfson, and Lisa Yuskavage. Recognised on various lists, both in and out of the art world, Zwirner has been ranked number two (in 2013 and 2014) and number three (in 2015) on the annual list of the 100 most powerful people in the art world published by ArtReview magazine; on the "Top 10 International Art Figures" in Harper's Bazaar Art China (2014); number two (behind Jeff Koons) in Art + Auction magazine's "Top 10: The Players with the Most Pull in 2013"; number two in Forbes magazine's "America's Most Powerful Art Dealers" (2012); and number one on Flash Art magazine's "Top 100 Galleries" chosen by artists (2008 and 2014).
For his launch in Asia, David Zwirner has committed to two floors within H Queen's. The decision signals a vote of confidence in the long-term prospects of the art market in Asia and confirms HQ's position as the premier location for Hong Kong's most prestigious galleries. Scheduled for completion in mid-2017, HQ will become an architectural icon and a new destination for the city's top artistic and lifestyle ventures.
"HQ is positioned to transform the dynamics of Central. With its advanced modern design and customised spaces, HQ will elevate the experience of art and lifestyle right in the heart of the city. We are very excited to have David Zwirner as our anchor tenant at HQ. We look forward to announcing other world-class tenants who also share our vision for the building's potential," says Kristine Li, Deputy General Manager of Henderson Leasing Agency Company Ltd.
"To mark our debut in Asia, it was critical to find an ideal space," notes David Zwirner. "HQ is a state-of-the-art building that exceeds our expectations and meets our strict criteria and high standards for exceptional architecture. HQ also reinforces our strong belief that Hong Kong is absolutely destined to be a major art hub in the region."
Situated in the centre of Hong Kong's art and lifestyle hub, the award-winning building will revolutionise the way high-end art galleries operate. An external gondola and operable curtain wall façade allow large-scale artworks to be delivered directly to each gallery floor. A high-speed glass elevator can also transport the crowd direct to specific floors. Designed by renowned architect and artist William Lim of CL3 Architects, HQ's unique architecture emphasises spaciousness, functionality, eco-friendliness and energy efficiency. With ideal spaces for art exhibitions, as well as floors dedicated for exclusive retail and dining establishments, HQ boasts multifunctional layouts, optimum floor-to-ceiling heights and expansive balconies to accommodate a wide range of exhibition and entertainment needs.
To celebrate the building's completion next year, HQ commissioned 10 Hong Kong artists to create a public art programme using its hoardings fronting Queen's Road Central, Pottinger Street and Stanley Street in Central. Extending over 2,500 square feet, this canvas created an opportunity for these artists to bring their art to the streets, transforming the site into a platform to spark creative dialogue and offer passers-by the opportunity to engage with new ideas.
Titled Time & Scale: 10 Hong Kong artists at HQ, the public art presentation offers audiences a tantalising taste of what to expect from HQ, Hong Kong's most dynamic vertical arts and lifestyle destination.
