HYATTSVILLE, Md., Feb. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Gypsum Association (GA) is pleased to announce that the Association-sponsored Product Category Rules (PCR) For Preparing an Environmental Product Declaration for North American Glass Mat Gypsum Panels has moved to the final third-party review stage. ASTM International is the program operator and oversaw development of the PCR by a stakeholder panel comprised of GA member company representatives and end-users including members of the building owner and architectural communities. This PCR document lays out the underlying requirements for life-cycle assessment and provides a set of specific rules, requirements and guidelines for developing an Environmental Product Declaration for glass mat panel products.
These PCR establish the criteria for appraising and reporting the environmental impact of the glass mat panel products manufactured by GA member companies American Gypsum Company LLC; Continental Building Products Operating Company, LLC; CertainTeed Gypsum, INC; CertainTeed Gypsum Canada, INC; CGC INC; Georgia-Pacific Gypsum LLC; National Gypsum Company; PABCO® Gypsum, a division of PABCO® building products, LLC; and United States Gypsum Company. Considered specialized performance boards, glass mat gypsum panels provide enhanced mold and moisture resistance and are specified for both interior and exterior applications.
Once finalized, the PCR will be critical to the creation of an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14025 conformance Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for glass mat gypsum panels. The industry wide EPD for North American Glass Mat Gypsum Panels will be the Gypsum Association's second EPD, and follows release of an EPD for type X gypsum board in 2014. Like its predecessor, this EPD will provide consumers including owners, architects, and sustainability professionals with vital environmental performance information addressing energy consumption, water use, global warming, waste, air emissions and other metrics related to production.
"Gypsum Association members are committed to sustainability and transparency, both of which are key drivers in design and construction today," says Gypsum Association Executive Director Stephen H. Meima. "We look forward to providing additional life-cycle assessment tools in 2016."
