Gumstix® Newest Linux COMs for IoT Gateway Applications
Texas Instruments WiLink™ 8 Module Enhances Wireless Communications on Overo COMs
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Gumstix, Inc., the premier provider of Linux® computers-on-module (COMs) for electronics manufacturers, today announced the availability of its Overo STORM-Y COMs, featuring the integration of Texas Instruments (TI) WiLink 8™ combo connectivity module. The new Overo STORM-Y COMs now provide 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi® with Access Point mode and Bluetooth® 4.1 with BLE, allowing our COM to serve simultaneously as client and host, critical for Internet of Things (IoT) gateway applications.
The Overo STORM-Y COMs offer a single antenna solution delivering best-in-class Wi-Fi for applications such as high-performance audio and video streaming, powered by Texas Instruments DaVinci DM3730 and Sitara AM3703 application processors. Gumstix' recently released Yocto Project 1.7 "Dizzy" image adds driver support for the WiLink 8 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module to Gumstix' software platform.
"The embedded Access Point on our Overo STORM-Y COMs combined with the customizing power of Geppetto™ , the most intuitive electronic design tool available, provides Gumstix customers the fastest time to market for IoT gateway applications," said W. Gordon Kruberg, M.D., president and CEO of Gumstix.
"TI's WiLink 8 modules are a great fit for power-optimized designs in a wide range of IoT applications," said Mattias Lange, business line manager, Wireless Connectivity Solutions, TI. "This cutting-edge technology within the Gumstix' Overo Storm-Y COMs enables customers to easily add Wi-Fi and dual-mode Bluetooth connectivity to their designs."
Overo STORM-Y COMs supersede their original Overo counterparts: the basic AirSTORM-Y at $139, DSP-ready FireSTORM-Y at $159 and the extended temperature IronSTORM-Y at $179. Overo STORM-Y series COMs are fully compatible with the existing line of Gumstix Overo expansion boards and offer a significant price reduction as compared to the original Overo STORM series COMs with wireless communications. All three are available for purchase at store.gumstix.com.
About Gumstix, Inc.
Gumstix is a forerunner in the advancement of fully integrated pre-production kits with advanced computer-on-module (COM) and expansion board components. Gumstix pioneered the concept of an extremely small COM with a full implementation of Linux in 2003. Since then, the company has grown to become the premier provider of Linux-based COMs and expansion boards, with over 15,000 diverse customers in more than 40 countries. Gumstix is the first company to offer a complete system (Geppetto) for designing and ordering custom embedded computers, trimming a typical four month process to one of three weeks. Working behind the scenes to make the development process transparent to the customer, Gumstix' vanguard technology portfolio decreases time-to-market and lowers costs for their commercial and industrial products.
