Guide to Events and Activities Happening on Nov. 15 - National Rural Health Day
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., Nov. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Every year in the United States, the third Thursday of November is recognized as National Rural Health Day. On Nov. 15, 2018, the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH), the 50 State Offices of Rural Health, federal, state and local agencies, and healthcare organizations across the country will honor the thousands of men and women, hospitals, healthcare professionals, emergency first responders and others serving the unique health needs of nearly 60 million rural lives.
Across the nation, governors and congressional leaders will proclaim National Rural Health Day, State Offices of Rural Health will convene rural stakeholders and there will be health fairs and health promotion activities, including special rural Walk with a Doc events. Walk with a Doc is a successful model, created by Ohio-based cardiologist Dr. David Sabgir, to encourage healthier behaviors and lifestyle for patients.
Two Twitter chats are planned during the day. Access to Healthcare in Rural Communities will be hosted by the RHIHub at 12 p.m. ET using #RuralHealthChat and the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) will lead a telehealth Twitter chat at 2 p.m. ET using #TalkTelehealth. The FORHP will also host the webinar CMS Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) Efforts in Rural Health at 2 p.m. ET.
NOSORH will host three information-packed webinars to discuss key issues affecting rural communities. Each 30-minute webinar will offer opportunities to chat with national and state experts and will provide resources to all attendees.
- Policy and the Power of Rural at 11 a.m. ET featuring Andrew Coats of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman
- Rural Networks: Making a Difference in the Opioid Epidemic at 3 p.m. ET featuring Rebecca Evansky, project manager, Adirondack Health Institute; Charlotte Crawford, chief executive officer, Lakes Plains Community Care Network; and facilitated by Karen Madden, director, NY State Office of Rural Health
- A Conversation on Rural EMS at 4 p.m. ET featuring Andy Gienapp, manager, Office of Emergency Medical Services, WY Department of Health and facilitated by Teryl Eisinger, executive director of NOSORH

Finally, the 2018 book of Community Stars will be released on the morning of Nov. 15. Community Stars is a collection of inspiring stories of over 70 women, men and organizations recognized by their peers as outstanding rural health collaborators, educators, communicators and innovators. Over 100 nominations were received representing 29 states. The Community Star publication will be available on PowerofRural.org.
