HERNDON, Va., May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- GTSI Chief Executive Officer Sterling Phillips has been appointed to the Commission on the Leadership Opportunity in US Government on the Cloud, also known as the Cloud2 Initiative. Its purpose is to develop a set of actionable recommendations governing cloud computing for both commercial and public sectors.

The senior executive commission operates under the auspices of the TechAmerica Foundation, a leading technology industry foundation.
"By its own estimates, the federal government today operates more than 2,000 data centers. And data center development has been part of GTSI's business portfolio for more than a decade," Phillips said in accepting the appointment. "Yet almost overnight, cloud computing fundamentally changes the data center landscape in both the public and private sectors, presenting major issues and opportunities for efficiency and cost-effective IT management."
Phillips will work with select Commission colleagues on issues of particular relevance to the public sector. "On the one hand, cloud computing represents a transformational technology trend with massive potential to alter the way IT infrastructure is purchased, managed, and used. To get there, serious concerns of security, privacy, and accountability must be addressed. It is in these areas where I expect to focus my attention," Phillips said.
Recommendations for government cloud deployment will be presented to Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke will receive commercial-facing recommendations.
Federal CIO Kundra recently estimated a $20 billion migration from federally-owned infrastructure to cloud environments.
"Implications of data movement from federal ownership to the cloud of this magnitude are enormous," Phillips stated. "I look forward to working with industry colleagues on sound processes, standards, and policies that facilitate effective cloud utilization."
