The award was presented by Chiapas Governor Juan Sabines Guerrero for "outstanding philanthropic action in the benefit of the most vulnerable communities of the state."
Specifically, Ricardo Salinas was celebrated for programs of Fundacion Azteca, including the Movimiento Azteca awareness and fundraising campaigns, the Vive sin Drogas anti-drug conferences, the Limpiemos Nuestro Mexico cleanup program, the Rompiendo el Silencio program against domestic violence, the Que Viva la Selva Lacandona art contest to bring attention to the tropical rainforests of Chiapas, and most importantly the Sustainable Rural Cities development program.

During the visit to Chiapas, Governor Sabines and Ricardo Salinas also inaugurated the Esperanza Azteca youth orchestra program in a public school in Tapachula.

The Orquesta Sinfonica Esperanza Azteca is part of "Programa Musical Esperanza Azteca" (PROMESA), a project sponsored by Grupo Salinas and Fundacion Azteca to educate youth in excellence, teamwork and high self-esteem through classical music training and practice.
