Grown-Ups are Unleashing Their Inner Child While Losing Weight and Gaining Healthier Habits at Camp Pocono Trails
REEDERS, Pa., Feb. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- For 25 years, campers age 7 to 25, have enjoyed a traditional camp experience on a 350 acre private lakefront while learning about fitness, self-esteem and healthy weight loss. Five years ago Camp Pocono Trails began offering a unique enhancement where some parents opt to join the fun, lose weight and learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.
"We wanted to offer an optional mini-camp opportunity for parents to experience camp first-hand so they can better support their child when they get home from camp," explained Tony Sparber, owner and operator of Camp Pocono Trails.
While children stay at camp from 2-8 weeks, parents can stay as little as a week and partake in the camp's endless activities.
The Goringe Family. Mom, Fonda Goringe, found her 11 days as a camper with husband Robert to be quite rewarding. Their daughter, Zoe, stayed for 6 weeks. Since camp this summer, Zoe has lost 45 pounds, her father as lost 30 pounds, and her mother lost 25 pounds.
"We all encouraged each other on our journey. Every day got easier. We worked hard but when you have fun things to look forward to, it makes the days go quicker. We would go to classes in kickboxing, Zumba, and boot camp. We played tennis together, we did water sports, we jet-skied, went tubing, canoed together, and did fun extracurricular activities like zip lining, an obstacle course, and tree trekking."
The Hayun Family. Hadas, Sammy and Natalie Hayun have gone to Camp Pocono Trails for 8 summers, both with and without their mom, Debra. This summer Mom and the kids lost a combined total of 100 pounds.
"The place is just beautiful. I fell in love with it, I'm a big kid at heart," said Mom, Debra Hayun. "The moms sleep on the other side of the lake in beautiful bunk houses. There's tubing, kayaking, kickboxing, yoga, Pilates and they teach us how to cook low calorie foods with lots of flavor. Moms bond fast. It's a special time, everyone can be themselves. It's like you're 16 years old, it's my fountain of youth, the kids give us life, it's priceless."
Daughter, Hadas, was happy to see her mom have so much fun. "Mom was there to enjoy herself, I didn't really see her all that much. It helped me when we got home, she was able to relate to what we experienced and cook all the nutritious recipes."
Jacob Horowitz, 14, loved having his mom, Tracy, at camp. "Now I can run faster, lift more and I have more definition in my legs, arms and stomach." After camp, his mother was very helpful as the gatekeeper in the kitchen. "I lose more because she supports me."
