Groundbreaking Video Demo Goes the Distance at ISC'12
Orange Silicon Valley and Bay Microsystems show a Global Lustre-based video distribution system extending Data Over 11,000Km
HAMBURG, Germany, June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- At ISC'12, the international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis, a ground breaking demonstration of a content distribution and "Large Data" solution, architected with leading edge technology from Orange Silicon Valley, Bay Microsystems, and Xyratex is being shown. The demonstration shows hundreds of HD videos being distributed over 11,000Km utilizing a 40Gbps link with high-performance servers rendering high quality wall-of-video.
This video distribution demonstration builds on the highly publicized Orange Silicon Valley and Bay Microsystems SCINet SC'11 showcase where a number of "Large Data" applications were shown running between multiple sites located over 11,000 optical Km apart using the Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet).
Several hundred high resolution, HD 1080p, videos are being stored, accessed, distributed and rendered on the video wall over the multi-site Lustre FS running on just two Xyratex ClusterStor™ 3000 SSU's. The Lustre FS uses global reach extensions and RDMA, provided by Xyratex, to distribute and stream jitter free, low-latency content over long distances. Using the Bay Microsystems IBEx™ M40 WAN optimization gateway, the native server fabric is extended as if the servers were in the same location. This is the first time anywhere that such large amounts of multi-session, multi-media data is being accessed and rendered in a dynamic and long-range network situation. Uses for such capability are seen to extend far beyond content distribution.

The Bay IBEx is for the first time allowing customers to optimize latency on their dedicated financial services networks, provide seamless data-center consolidation and global access, allow global data collaboration, distribute growing amounts of media content, and overall provide scalable infrastructure for the massive trend of cloud storage and computing.
IBEx provides gateway capabilities allowing direct managed connections to any type of WAN service including direct SONET/SDH/DWDM, Ethernet WAN, and TE enabled routed and switched network service. IBEx natively extends RDMA enabled InfiniBand and Ethernet lossless networks and accelerates TCP/IP networking. The IBEx is application independent and optimizes the network utilization, which differs from the application acceleration platforms for dedup, HTML, and others. The IBEx-s will provide for secure tunneling and security across various customer data flows. The IBEx family allows optimization on sub-10Gbps networks up to 40Gbps today and 100G coming soon.

Within the high-performance computing community, current customers are seeing the volume of science data that needs to be shared among global research sites reaching levels beyond what current 10 Gbps networks and traditional network protocols can handle. They also are moving to RDMA-based communication opening new possibilities for researchers by enabling quick and efficient data transfer for "big data" applications. It does so by eliminating many of the typical network performance bottlenecks and helps users make much more efficient use of the WAN infrastructure – this helps to ensure that scientific progress is unimpeded even as data needs grow.
