Groundbreaking Exhibition DIALOG IN THE DARK Unveils in New York City
Visually Impaired, Blind Tour Guides Lead Visitors through Sensory Exhibition In Complete Darkness
NEW YORK, Aug. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Premier Exhibitions, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRXI), the company behind "BODIES…The Exhibition" and "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" opened its newest blockbuster experience, DIALOG IN THE DARK at South Street Seaport this weekend. DIALOG IN THE DARK is a unique sensory tour of New York City where visitors are led by visually impaired guides through a specially constructed and totally darkened exhibition. DIALOG IN THE DARK is an invitation to experience the world in another way and to re-discover New York using all of your senses except sight.
DIALOG IN THE DARK replicates familiar Manhattan environments specially simulated in likeness to original, familiar landmarks of the city and challenges individuals to navigate through these galleries in total darkness. A reversal of roles is created as blind and visually impaired guides introduce you to the world they know. Visitors are taken out of their comfort zone and familiar surroundings and daily routines become a new experience. Guides provide security and a sense of orientation and show us our eyes are not the only windows on the world.
"DIALOG IN THE DARK is truly a conversation- an intensely thought-provoking and emotional experience between visitor and exhibition and visitor and guide," says Chris Davino, Chief Executive Officer of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. "We are proud and excited to bring this concept to New York City."
Prior to entering the exhibition visitors are provided with walking canes and given a tutorial on how best to use them before meeting their guides, all of whom hail from New York. For the next 45 minutes DIALOG IN THE DARK guides will be the link to the world around them leading small groups expertly and securely through a variety of interactive environments. Visitors will maneuver through well-known New York City locales, while New York-centric scents, sounds, temperatures and textures all perfected to create an unforgettable experience.
DIALOG IN THE DARK's guides were hired through New York-based Lighthouse International, the 106 year old non-profit organization dedicated to fighting vision loss through prevention, treatment and empowerment.
"This exhibit powerfully touches everyone – and reinforces the importance of protecting and preserving our vision, as well gaining an important understanding of the courage and challenges for those who have visual impairment. More and more Americans are facing vision loss and awareness of the issues and how to help is critical for us all," says Mark G. Ackermann, President and CEO of Lighthouse International. "We are honored to partner with DIALOG IN THE DARK and bring our expertise and perspective to this extraordinary experience."
