Ground Labs Advances Battle Against Identity Theft
SYDNEY, Nov. 5, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- More than nine million people become victims of identity theft each year in the United States alone, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Although individuals can take some measures to protect themselves, such as shredding important documents, they are helpless in the face of major security breaches, such as when more than 100 million credit and debit card numbers were reported to be stolen from Heartland Payment Systems in 2008.
Fortunately, organizations like the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) have developed data security standards to hold companies accountable for how they store sensitive cardholder data. The newest version of the standards, released last week, helps organizations improve their information security while reducing their vulnerabilities to data theft.
Companies of all sizes struggle to protect their customers' credit and debit card numbers. Employees often violate data storage policies through simple human error and lapses in judgment, leaving IT managers unaware of where all the cardholder data is stored. Until recently, finding misplaced data was a major challenge, but yesterday Ground Labs announced a new software tool designed to help companies reduce their data storage risks and prevent security breaches.
Ground Labs is an industry leader in PCI compliance solutions for companies worldwide. Its latest software solution, Enterprise Recon, is designed to help organizations reduce the likelihood of cardholder data breaches and achieve compliance with the recently revised Data Security Standard, PCI DSS 2.0.
Most computer users are familiar with antivirus systems that search for viruses and trojans. Enterprise Recon uses a similar technique to identify stored cardholder data in virtually any type of document on any supported computer system within an organization. The network-level software then consolidates all its findings in an easily readable reporting format that identifies companies' data storage risks and vulnerabilities.
"Although our products are marketed to corporate organizations, the real benefactors are individual consumers," says Stephen Cavey, Director of Corporate Development at Ground Labs. "We're proud of our role in the fight against identity theft, protecting innocent people from credit card fraud."
