"Grindr users have their finger on the pulse of gay culture and destinations," said Joel Simkhai, Founder and CEO of Grindr. "They use Grindr when they travel, and they ask other Grindr users about the best places to go out, where to eat and what to do on their trips. So it's only natural that we'd ask them about some of their favorite places. From the best gay beaches of Rio de Janeiro to the best gay festival in Sydney, Grindr users have voted, and our results show that major cities across Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S. are now considered top picks for gay travel."
In addition to surveying users, the Grindr team honored Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the Best International Destination to Get Married. Since Argentina became the first Latin American nation to legalize gay marriage, granting same-sex couples all the legal rights, responsibilities and protections that marriage brings to heterosexuals, Grindr wanted to show their admiration by honoring the city with the award. Subsequently, in honor of being situated in the first state to legalize gay marriage back in 2004, Grindr awarded Provincetown, Mass., the Best Destination to Get Married in the United States.
Complementing the Guinness Book of World Records' naming of Sao Paulo, Brazil, as the biggest pride parade in the world in 2006, Grindr has also awarded Sao Paulo with the Best Gay Pride Celebration Award. The rest of the winners of the 2012 Grindr Gay Travel Awards are:
- Gayest U.S. City: New York City
- Gayest International City: London
