Greening Testing Laboratories obtains Accreditation as a Technical Service for ECE R90

DETROIT, Jan. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Greening Testing Laboratories, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been accredited as a Technical Service for testing brake pads, shoes, linings, discs and drums to ECE Regulation 90 (ECE R90) by RDW, the Netherlands' Type-Approval authority. Greening is the first technical service in any discipline to be accredited by RDW beyond the European Union area.

ECE R90 is a regulation of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations, a working party of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). Fifty-eight countries worldwide are currently participants of this agreement, including all EU nations, Australia, Japan, Russia, South Africa and Turkey.

This particular regulation applies to the design, construction and performance requirements and test protocols for replacement brake components in motor vehicles and trailers. All replacement brake rotors fitted to commercial vehicles type-approved after November 1, 2014, must meet these specifications. The rule, originated in the 1990s, originally applied to brake pads and shoes to ensure that replacement parts would perform within a close tolerance of the part originally provided on the vehicle.

The regulation has now been expanded to brake discs and drums, with full implementation set for November 1, 2016. Greening is accredited by the Dutch RDW and British Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) to perform the ECE R90 test for brake drums, pads, discs and shoes, and to issue ECE-certified test reports.

Replacement brake discs and drums are measured in three respects: braking performance, high braking load strength and thermal fatigue. In order to attain certification, a part must meet minimum requirements in all three areas.
