Greenberg Traurig Attorney Tami Cowden Named Chair of Newly-Formed Appellate Litigation Section of the State Bar of Nevada
LAS VEGAS, July 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Tami Cowden, Of Counsel with the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, has been named the founding Chair of the State Bar of Nevada's new Appellate Litigation Section. Formed to enhance the role and skills of lawyers engaged in the practice of appellate law, the Appellate Litigation Section recently held its inaugural meeting at which the Honorable Kristina Pickering and the Honorable James Hardesty provided the opening remarks.
Cowden, a litigation and appellate attorney in the firm's Las Vegas office, has been involved in guiding the section's formation and development for the past two years.
"I am deeply honored to serve as chair of the new Appellate Litigation Section for the State Bar of Nevada," said Cowden. "The appellate practice in Nevada has grown significantly over the past several years. I am excited to help launch this new section that will provide an array of professional development and involvement opportunities as well as serve as a resource for the state's growing appellate practice and its appellate litigation lawyers."
As chair of the section, Cowden will serve with Vice Chair Seth Floyd of McDonald Carano Wilson LLP; Secretary Bradley Schrager of Jones Vargas and Treasurer Puneet Garg of Gordon Silver. The Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada officially approved the new section at its April 2012 meeting.
According to Cowden, planning is already underway for establishing subcommittees within the section for various areas including pro bono appellate cases, rules advisement, CLE, and a publications committee. She said that several members of the section are already working on updating the Nevada Appellate Handbook, led by Beau Sterling of Sterling Law, LLC.
Cowden has more than 20 years experience as an appellate attorney, with a focus on representations in the Nevada Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In local state and federal trial courts, she has authored briefs resulting in grants of summary judgment, defeating class certification, and obtaining expert witness disqualification. A published author, Cowden is a member of the Board of Directors of the Clark County Bar Association (CCBA) and the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys. She also serves as associate editor of Communique, CCBA's publication.
Before joining the firm, Cowden was a member of the faculty of the University of Denver College of Law. She also served as a staff attorney with the Colorado Court of Appeals for several years. Cowden received her J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Arizona State University. She is admitted to practice law in Nevada and Colorado.
Greenberg Traurig's Appellate Practice has more than 50 lawyers in offices across the country. The national Appellate Practice was named an "Appellate Group of the Year" for 2010 by Law360, a respected online legal news service.
