Green Mountain College Gets Excellent Environmental Grade in Princeton Review's 'The Best 373 Colleges'
POULTNEY, Vt., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Green Mountain College received a score of 98 out of a perfect 99 in the Princeton Review's annual college "green" rankings. The education services company features GMC in the new 2011 edition of its guide, The Best 373 Colleges.
Only about 15% of America's 2,500 four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges are profiled in the book, which is the Princeton Review's flagship college guide. GMC also ranked fourth in the category "Class Discussions Encouraged."
"Obviously we're pleased The Best 373 Colleges gave us such high marks for our environmental efforts—that is a major focus of our curriculum and culture," said GMC President Paul J. Fonteyn. "We also place a high value on the quality of dialogue in the classroom between our students and faculty and it's gratifying to receive national affirmation for that."
This spring, the College opened a new combined heat and power (CHP) biomass plant which burns woodchips and provides 85% of the school's heat and 20% of its electricity. Through this and other initiatives, Green Mountain expects to be the first higher education institution in the nation to be climate neutral by 2011 through reducing its own emissions by over 50%.
"We commend Green Mountain College for its outstanding academics, which is the primary criteria for our selection of schools for the book," said Robert Franek, Princeton Review's Senior VP/Publishing and author of The Best 373 Colleges.
Ratings are based on institutional data collected from the schools during the 2009-10 academic year and student surveys conducted for the book. The ratings are scored on a scale of 60 to 99 and they appear in each school profile in eight categories including: academics, admissions selectivity, financial aid, fire safety, and green, a measure of school's commitment to environmentally-related policies, practices and education.
