LONDON and BOSTON, Sept. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Man Gaming, one of the world's fastest-growing online games retailers, has partnered with distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider Cloudant to manage and deliver database performance and scalability for the next stage of the gaming company's growth.

With significant growth in the past year, Green Man Gaming needed to scale to a more efficient model. Cloudant manages database information, which is replicated across a Cloudant database cluster on SoftLayer® hosted infrastructure, providing 24x7 high performance and availability for Green Man Gaming customers worldwide. Account transactions are inserted as new JSON documents, and Cloudant's incremental MapReduce engine constantly updates changing balances with little overhead.
"Partnering with Cloudant is a true sign of how much our business has grown and how committed we are to supporting our eager audience of core gamers with best-in-class technology services," said Green Man Gaming Co-Founder and EVP of Engineering Lee Packham. "Cloudant will be invaluable in providing a scalable managed service that can meet epic demand spikes, especially as we head into our busiest time of the year with the launches of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4."
Green Man Gaming initially ran its own NoSQL database when the company launched in 2010, using the database's MapReduce functionality to keep customer account balances up to date. As business grew, they switched to managed NoSQL DBaaS from Cloudant to redundantly store and confidently support massive traffic spikes brought on by rapid growth. Today, Green Man Gaming stores 500 gigabytes of data on Cloudant, which is stored in triplicate across its database cluster to ensure high availability.
"Peak concurrency is now ten times what we were seeing just 12 months ago," said Packham. "Knowing that we have proactive support from the same people who actually wrote Cloudant's software — some of the only people in the world who have experience with databases at this size and scale — that kind of technical support is invaluable to us. It gives me even more confidence when we run promotions and sales that send a ton of traffic to the site."
The Cloudant DBaaS is hosted and scaled across multiple data centers worldwide. With a RESTful JSON API, an incremental MapReduce engine, and built-in full-text search based on Apache Lucene, Cloudant delivers low-latency, highly-available data layer performance by distributing data access closer to the network edge.
"Green Man Gaming is a great example of how Cloudant delivers peace of mind to its customers. For new Web applications in critical markets like online retail, our DBaaS provides a reliable, scalable, high-performance solution that they don't need to worry about," said Cloudant CEO Derek Schoettle. "Our partnership with Green Man Gaming enables them to continue their impressive growth trajectory without compromising service excellence."
