Green Alley: Triclosan, Banned by the U.S. F.D.A., Remains in Various Personal Care Products
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Aug. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- On September 6, 2016, the U.S. F.D.A. published the official ban of triclosan and 18 other chemicals in "consumer antiseptic washes," following strong research revealing several safety hazards caused by the compounds. The prohibition takes effect on September 6th this year, allotting companies now a month to reformulate their soaps, and hand and body washes without any of the 19 substances.
Yet, the embargo will not apply to the same ingredients in several other personal care goods.
Triclosan is the most commonly used ingredient in such products amongst its family of antibacterial compounds, and will remain legal in lotions, face masks, and plenty more past this September. In other words, these skin care items that people apply daily will continue to put users, especially growing children, at risk of disrupting normal development, generating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and disheveling hormone regulation.
Furthermore, peer-reviewed human studies prove that skin and serious eye irritation, and increased allergy sensitivity are large possibilities when applying what was previously deemed as safe doses of triclosan to the face and body.
"Consequences of long-term usage of triclosan are very real, yet its functional purpose is questionable," stated Dr. DoHyun Cho, CEO of Green Alley. Though its original function was to prevent bacterial contamination in hospitals and other clinical settings, triclosan's eventual widespread use led companies to commercialize on its antiseptic selling point to regular consumers. The unremarkable reality is that regular soap is just as effective as antiseptic soap, sans the health hazards.
While there is progress in federal regulation for personal care items, it is slow and cannot completely shield consumers from health threats. Ultimately, the people themselves possess the greatest authority in their health, and every purchase of a product that contains natural, safe ingredients is a vote against conventional items that are largely synthetic and controversial.
