Greater Baltimore Committee Urges Baltimore City Council to Support Police Budget to Protect Public Safety and Fight Crime

BALTIMORE, May 30, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Greater Baltimore Committee has sent a letter to Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young and members of the City Council urging that they oppose proposed cuts to the Baltimore City Police budget and ensure police are adequately funded to do their jobs effectively at a time when the city is in the midst of a public safety crisis.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh has proposed the need for $5.5 million from the public safety budget to help contribute to the city's share of the city school system's deficit. Meanwhile some elected city council members have suggested deeper cuts to the police budget in Fiscal Year 2018.

"Law enforcement efforts and public safety are at a crisis point in Baltimore City. The Fiscal Year 2018 budget is not the appropriate vehicle to cause a reduction or elimination of effective police resources that can reduce crime. The Police Department budget should be funded to the level needed to stem the spike in crime that our city is experiencing. Now is not the time to risk the health and welfare of our citizens who all too frequently succumb to a small contingent of citizens wreaking havoc in Baltimore's neighborhoods," states the May 26 letter, signed by Donald C. Fry, President and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee.
