NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- GranuFlo lawsuits (http://www.thegranuflolawsuit.com/) alleging personal injury and wrongful death due to the administration of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte dialysis concentrates continue to mount in courts around the country, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to the West Virginia Record, five new claims were filed in West Virginia Federal Court last month, four of which allege wrongful deaths due to the use of the two products. All of the lawsuits further allege that GranuFlo and NaturaLyte caused heart attacks, strokes and other catastrophic cardiac events in dialysis patients.

"The allegations put forth in these new filings echo what we have heard from many of our clients since the announcement of the GranuFlo recall last year. We expect that the litigation involving GranuFlo and NaturaLyte will continue to grow," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free GranuFlo lawsuit evaluations to dialysis patients who suffered cardiac arrest, heart attacks, stroke, sudden cardiac death or other side effects allegedly related to the administration of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte during dialysis treatments.
GranuFlo Recall
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are both manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care, the largest provider of dialysis products and services in the U.S. In March 2012, the company issued an Urgent Product Notification for the two dialysis concentrates, warning clinics throughout the country that certain dosages of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte could result in metabolic alkalosis, a condition marked by excessive levels of bicarbonate in the blood. Metabolic alkalosis is known to increase the risk for sudden and life-threatening heart events in dialysis patients.
Several months later, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) designated the GranuFlo recall a Class I recall. Class I is the FDA's most serious recall category, and indicates that a product poses a serious risk of injury and death. The New York Times reported in June 2012 that the FDA was also investigating Fresenius, after the agency learned that dialysis clinics within the company's network had received notification of the issues associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte in November 2011. The agency is trying to determine if Fresenius' decision not to notify other dialysis centers at that time violated any federal regulations.
According to court documents, the five GranuFlo lawsuits filed this month in West Virginia are likely to be transferred to the U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts, where hundreds of similar claims are currently pending in a multidistrict litigation. Victims of heart injuries allegedly associated with the use of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages related to their injuries.
