grandPad® Chief Gerontologist Appears on Syndicated TV Talk Show
Dr. Kerry Burnight talks about loneliness in senior citizens on "The Doctors"
ORANGE, Calif. , June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Research from Brigham Young University shows that chronic loneliness is as dangerous to the health of older adults as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
grandPad® Chief GerontologistDr. Kerry Burnight recently appeared on "The Doctors" — a daily syndicated talk show hosted by leading doctors to highlight current health issues and how to live a better life — to discuss the impact of loneliness on older adults.
On the show, which aired Wednesday, May 24, 2017, Burnight noted that a recent large-scale study showed that 43% of older adults report feeling lonely.
"Older adults who are lonely have a 25% greater likelihood of dying prematurely," said Burnight. "Loneliness significantly increases rates of cancer, heart disease, and dementia. It is the biggest risk factor for elder abuse. It creates terrible suffering, but the great news? Chronic loneliness is solvable."
Burnight says that occasional phone calls are not providing seniors with the communication and connection they need. Instead, she recommends setting up regular communication that is predictable and dictated by a schedule. This will allow the senior to feel connected and included in the lives of their loved ones. Scheduled video calls are especially powerful in facilitating connection.
Loneliness in seniors is also costly. Studies show that among seniors, up to 10% of physician visits are motivated by loneliness.
