Grand Opening of Bikestation Hillsboro Provides Fun for the Whole Community
Oregon's First Full-Service Bike Transit Center Celebrated with Food, Tours and Dedications by Community Leaders
LONG BEACH, Calif. and HILLSBORO, Ore., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Grand Opening of the Bikestation Hillsboro bike transit center was announced today by Mobis Transportation/Bikestation, the leading developer of sustainable bicycle and other alternative transportation infrastructure systems. The public is invited to the open house celebration on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at Bikestation Hillsboro, located on the ground floor of the new Intermodal Transit Facility (near Tuality Hospital/SE 8th Avenue Blue Line MAX stop), at 265 SE 8th Ave., Hillsboro, Oregon 97123. The event will begin with tours from 3:30-5:00 p.m. and the dedication ceremony will be at 5:00 p.m., with appetizers and beverages provided.
According to Andrea White-Kjoss, chief executive officer of Mobis/Bikestation, "Our Grand Opening will be a celebration for the people of Hillsboro. Even in a sustainability-conscious state like Oregon, Hillsboro is leading the way with the first full-service Bikestation bike transit center. We will commemorate this event with refreshments, a raffle drawing with prizes provided by Bike Gallery, Bikestation tours, and welcomes from the City Council President, Aron Carleson, and other Hillsboro community leaders. We hope everyone in Hillsboro who's interested in commuting by bike and other alternatives to car transportation will join us."
The new Bikestation facility offers a range of amenities including electronically secure indoor bike parking, showers, restrooms, lockers, a bicycle self-repair stand with tools, and transit information. Bikestation is designed to address the needs of current cyclists and people who'd like to bicycle but shy away due to concerns about theft and convenience. The transit center operates on a low-cost membership model and members can use not only the Hillsboro facility, but any Bikestation located across the country.
The Bikestation grand opening will coincide with the Railvolution 2010 Conference in Portland, in which visionaries, professionals and advocacy representatives address how urban planning, land use and transit can improve communities and provide greater livability.
"We're thrilled to open Bikestation Hillsboro and are very excited about what it brings to our community – a new concept in alternative transportation that makes bicycle transit more feasible for more people, improving our city's walkability and bikeability," said Bob Reitmajer, Facilities & Fleet Director, City of Hillsboro.
Bikestation funding partners include Tuality Healthcare, Pacific University and the City of Hillsboro. Funding also came through a combination of stimulus funds and Oregon state lottery bonds.
