PHOENIX, April 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Grand Canyon University will be adding another high-profile local hero to its basketball coaching ranks as the school introduces its new women's basketball coach at a news conference at noon MST Tuesday. GCU President Brian Mueller and Vice President of Athletics Mike Vaught will be on hand to introduce the Lopes' newest head coach.
Like Phoenix Suns legend Dan Majerle, who heads the GCU men's basketball program, the new women's coach is well-known in the Phoenix community and brings impressive credentials to the position.
Mueller said the University's academic track record and reputation among regulatory bodies, as well as its raised athletic profile, made the opening attractive to coaches across the country. GCU recently had twice as many winter sport student-athletes honored as Academic All-WAC selections than any other school in the conference. The University also has had three Academic All-Americans within the past year, the softball team had the highest GPA among all NCAA Division I schools in 2016, and its student-athletes carry a cumulative 3.33 GPA.
"The success of our athletic teams on and off the playing field, the atmosphere on campus and our impending postseason eligibility are part of what attracts coaches," Mueller said. "But the prospective coaches we met with were equally impressed with the academic standing of the University. We've gone through an unprecedented period of regulatory achievement in the past nine months with our major accrediting bodies, including a comprehensive NCAA Division I transition process. That level of excellence attracted some very impressive coaching candidates in our nationwide search."
Media should park in the 33rd Avenue garage, located at the main entrance of Grand Canyon University (33rd Avenue & Camelback Road). Members of the GCU Athletic Communications staff will be on hand to direct media to the Student Union.
The press conference will also be streamed live on GCU.TV.
