WHY: The Philadelphia AIDS Consortium is one of the country's longest running National Direct grantee AmeriCorps program serving the needs of health care for HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons.
In 2000, The Corporation for National and Community Service awarded TPAC its first three (3) year national direct AmeriCorps grant setting the stage for a unique, effective and time proven community service initiative: Access to Care Through Service (ACTS). This national service program challenges members of those communities most devastated by HIV/AIDS; specifically, Latino and African American men and women.
ACTS's purpose is to empower, engage and educate those persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS to become their own public health advocates and serve as leaders in their respective communities by showing how to navigate the complicated health care system to get medical service and prevention and counseling services.
While the graduation ceremony will be for the fifty (50) ACTS members of the 2010 class, they join the ranks of 491 ACTS graduates since the year 2000 who serve in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and California at fourteen (14) sites.
There will also be an unveiling of a rendering for a new City Mural, to be located at 2100 South Norwood, commemorating ACTS's 10 year history and the 21 years of community service provided by TPAC in its fight against HIV/AIDS.
