Governor Rendell Helps Boost Awareness of Funding Needs Facing 'Pride of the Susquehanna' Riverboat
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today made good on his promise to help the owners of the "Pride of the Susquehanna" riverboat raise awareness of the urgent need for private donations to keep the boat in operation.
"The Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat is one of the great features of the Greater Harrisburg area and has become an icon of the community," said Governor Rendell. "I encourage everyone to join me in donating one dollar to the SOS Campaign. If everyone gives a little, we can raise a lot – and together, we can help save the Pride."
The Governor presented a symbolic $1 personal donation to the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society, which owns and operates the stern-driven paddle wheeler that has served the region for 22 years. The Governor's Office staff also contributed $117 in personal donations.
In mid-June, the society held an event to ask each resident of the central Pennsylvania region to contribute one dollar to help keep the boat afloat. The Governor could not participate in that event due to the state's budget deadline, but pledged he would show support – which he did today.
The society is trying to raise $80,000 to cover operating expenses and fund a much-needed engine overhaul for the riverboat. Society officials emphasize that the riverboat is operated by a non-profit organization that relies on private donations for its continued operation, and is not funded by or affiliated with the City of Harrisburg.
