Governor Rendell Congratulates Pennsylvania's '2011 Teacher of the Year'
Sixth Grade Teacher from Abington School District Receives Award
HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Teachers deserve significant credit for exceptional increases in student achievement, Governor Edward G. Rendell said today at the 2011 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year award ceremony.
"I often talk about the unprecedented resources we've provided for education over the past eight years, but the results we've gotten could not have happened without the extraordinary commitment of teachers and others who work on the front lines," Governor Rendell said during a ceremony in Harrisburg honoring the dozen finalists from across the state.
After Governor Rendell spoke, Jeffrey Chou, a sixth grade teacher from Highland Elementary School in the Abington School District in Montgomery County, was named 2011 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Chou teaches at the Highland Elementary School.
Each finalist was introduced at the awards ceremony by a current or former student. Chou was introduced by Lillian Sall.
"Teachers have to be jacks-of-all-trades who are good a passing knowledge, good at teaching techniques and good at showing our students their endless potential," Chou said.
Chou was chosen from among 12 finalists to represent Pennsylvania in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
Pennsylvania has participated in the teacher of the year program since 1965. The program is co-sponsored by the state Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National State Teacher of the Year.
