Governor Rendell Announces Resignation of DCED Secretary George Cornelius
HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell said today that Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary George E. Cornelius will step down on June 30 to become the president of Bridgewater College in Virginia.
The Governor commended Cornelius for his leadership and his work to position the commonwealth for a strong economic recovery as the recession ends.
"Secretary Cornelius did an outstanding job leading DCED through some of the most challenging economic times we've faced," Governor Rendell said. "He was committed to maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of our industries, businesses and people -- frequently citing education as the most important economic development tool.
"As an enthusiastic supporter of education, workforce development and skill building, I am sure he will excel in his new role as the president of Bridgewater College," the Governor added.
"It's been a privilege and a great experience to work for Governor Rendell in service to the people of Pennsylvania," Cornelius said. "As a passionate advocate for education, lifelong learning and advanced skills-training, I simply could not pass up this tremendous opportunity."
Cornelius became acting DCED secretary a year ago. Prior to joining the Rendell administration, he was CEO of Arkema Inc., a global diversified chemical company based in Philadelphia.
The Governor will soon name an acting secretary to succeed Cornelius.
